BEHIND THE HOLLOWS
HISTORY IS OFTEN MORE DISTURBING THAN FICTION.
The Hollows is fictional. The world that allowed places like it to exist wasn't.
For centuries, people experiencing mental illness, disability or simply behaving outside what society considered “normal” could find themselves hidden away, institutionalised and stripped of control over their own lives.
The language changed.
Asylums became hospitals.
Patients became residents.
Treatment became care.
And, thankfully, attitudes changed too.
But progress was rarely neat.
The Hollows takes that history and builds a fictional institution that survives through different generations — allowing each book to explore how ideas about madness, treatment, control, dignity and care changed over time.
Some of what happens within its walls is imagined.
The attitudes that inspired it often weren't.
